Perspiration of the armpits is almost odorless when it reaches the skin surface. Bacteria (always present on the skin) cause perspiration to decay and odor to form. Also, the perspiration glands and the bacteria work non-stop night and day. Perspiration may stain, rot or take the color out of certain fabrics.
Usually simple washing with soap and water and wearing clean clothes is sufficient protection against unpleasant odor. If not, then deodorants become necessary since they contain chemicals to slow the growth of bacteria.
There are two main types of deodorant:
The simple type that stops perspiration odor and the other which is an antiperspirant.
When selecting a brand be sure to read and follow directions on the label.
What to do:
- Wash more than your armpits at least once a day. (More is required in summer).
- Use natural fabrics since they absorb perspiration better than synthetic materials.
- If the above does not work, try an anti-bacterial soap.
- If it still does not produce results, use a commercial antiperspirant since they combine antiperspirant and deodorant. (Deodorant alone will not be effective).
- If you are allergic to the above, try using topical creams that do not contain any of the irritating perfumes.
- Watch what you eat, since protein and oil extracts from certain foods remain the body’s excretions long after they are eaten such as fish, garlic, curry and many more.
